Dr. Angela O. Benson

Dr. Angela Benson is a born-again Christian who accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior and Lord while in high school. Since then, she has grown in her faith and love for God, and has held several leadership positions in the Church and Christian organizations including Membership of the Board of Trustees, at Providence Baptist Church, Liberia; and is the current President of AGLOW for Jesus –Liberia Chapter.

Dr. Angela Benson was  appointed by the MPMI General Overseer as Matron for Model Prayer Ministries International (MPMI) in 2012; and as member of the Board of Trustees of Herald of His Imminent Coming (HOHIC) in 2022. She is passionate about bringing souls to Christ. She works diligently to expand the ministry’s missionary, soul-winning, church planting, and discipleship programs through prayers, substantial financial assistance, injecting new ideas, and encouraging the laborers in the vineyard.

She is co-founder and the current CEO of the Global Health Innovations and Action Foundation (GHIA Foundation), an International Non-Governmental Organization with a focus on helping to reduce disease burden among women and children. Until recently, she was the Secretary General of Liberia College of Physicians and Surgeons (LCPS), having served as the Assistant Secretary General up till 2013. Together with the executive members, she provided oversight for the training and services of the resident doctors. She was instrumental in the successful graduation/induction of the first cohort of 13 specialists trained in Liberia. She is the immediate past President of the Liberia Chapter of the West African College of Physicians (WACP), and immediate past Vice President of the regional body.

Prior to that, Dr. Benson was the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Adviser for Emergency and Humanitarian Action (EHA-AFRO) providing technical support and managing multi-million dollar grant to support countries during emergency in the African region.  She held other key positions in WHO such as, the WHO Representative in Lesotho, Southern Africa; and the Country Epidemiologist of the WHO in Ethiopia for five years. Before joining WHO, she served as UNICEF-Liberia Project Officer for Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) and for Essential Drugs and Medical Supplies. She has worked on health systems issues and health care delivery service at the county, national, regional and global levels.

She and her husband, Dr. Jimi Benson founded the Benson Hospital in Paynesville, Liberia with the mission of Compassion, Equity, and Excellency. Dr. Benson continues to provide administrative support to the Benson Hospital, and serve as a  consultant to the Ministry of Health on the National Health Policy and Plan as well as implementation of the Essential Package of Health Services (EPHS). Since the 2014 Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) outbreak in Liberia, she served with a team of consultants who worked on the Post- Ebola Health System Assessment and Building a Resilient Health System, which led to development of a National Investment Plan.

She served as Treasurer, Vice President and President in many Professional and Service Organizations including the Liberia Medical and Dental Association, Liberia College of Physicians & Surgeons, the Traditional Practices affecting the Health of Women and Children and the Rotary Club respectively.

Dr. Benson has an MD from the A. M. Dogliotti College of Medicine, University of Liberia, a Child Health Diploma from the National University of Dublin, Ireland and an International Masters degree in Public Health from the Hebrew University of Hadassah, Israel.  She attended numerous international health workshops and seminars to represent various organizations.

She is married to Dr. Jimi O. Benson, a Family Physician, and they are blessed with both biological and adopted children and grandchildren.
